The 17-year-old Awoniyi has been the standout striker since the creation of the present U20 team in the absence of Success, who despite not having made an impact with the Flying Eagles has played top flight football with Granada in the Spanish La Liga, a development which has led to debates over who should be the team’s main striker.
But Awoniyi says it will be nice if both of them can partner up front for Nigeria.
“I would like to play with him (Success),” he told SL10ng. “He’s not a new player to me because we’ve known each other since the U17’s and I know he’s a quality striker.
“Now he plays in Spain which means he’s more experienced and mature now and that is good for us.
“But it is left for our coaches to decide what they want but it will be nice to be in the attack with him.”
Success was the main striker during the U17’s, but a hamstring injury meant Awoniyi took his place and has established himself as the team’s first choice striker ever since.
