Edo State chess coach Omoyewmen Afolabi believes the country will produce a grand master in the sport soon, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.
Afolabi told NAN in Benin during the week that the dream would be realised if the game is popularised at the grassroots.
According to her, if the state can host a series of chess competitions at intervals of four months, there will be improvements.
The coach said, “If other states are also made to get involved at the various youth levels, the game will produce grand masters in no distant time.
“Grand masters are the highest stage in the game and I think Nigeria really needs to put some measures in place to attain that level.”
Afolabi said involving children in playing of chess early could help them advance in mathematics in schools as well improve their thinking ability.
“I believe children that play chess perform well academically, because it improves their sense of reasoning,” she added.
The coach urged parents to encourage their children to participate in sport of their choice.
