The management board of the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) have announced the start of the earlier proposed break of the league for the duration of the 2015 FIFA Women World Cup taking place in Canada.
The break as described in a release by the Secretary of the NWFL board will start on the 20th May, 2015 and span through the period of the World Cup and the League will resume when the Super Falcons get back to the country.
“In consideration of Nigeria’s participation in the 2015 FIFA Women World Cup in Canada, we wish to inform all Women League clubs that the NWFL after due consultations has decided to stop the Women League temporarily with effect from 20th May, 2015 and throughout the period of the Women World cup. The League will resume after the Super Falcons returns to Nigeria,” states the release.
And it continues: “Please
be informed that the decision is imperative so as to allow clubs, players and
officials and all concern football loving Nigerians to actively support the
Super Falcons of Nigeria in her quest to win the 2015 FIFA World Cup, and
moreso, that most of the players playing in the league will definitely feature
for Nigeria in the World cup.”
The Super Falcons will play their first
match in the competition against Sweden on June 8.
