Rivers Angels Crowned As NWFL Champions


A first half penalty strike from Ebere Ngozi ensured that Rivers Angels defeated Confluence Queens 1-0 in an exhibition match played at the FIFA Goal Project Technical Centre in Abuja on Tuesday.



The exhibition match saw a much improved Confluence Queens team against Rivers Angels, although experience counted at the end of the match duration.



Ijeoma Obi rattled the woodwork, before lanky striker Ijeoma Emenike blazed over on 4 minutes.



Henry Grace then dribbled her way past Confluence Queens defense line, but she was denied by the sharp reflexes of Oluwaseun Bello.



Former Rivers Angels striker Lola Philips combined well with Damilola Koku to force Charity John to a save in the 11th minute.



Rivers Angels were soon in front when Ijeoma Emenike wriggled free before she was brought down by Tosin Emmanuel.



Ebere Ngozi easily dispatched the spot-kick on 14th minute for the star-studded Rivers Angels team.



Confluence Queens upped their game, with Captain Tobiloba Olarewaju, Rosemary Okoro and Carine Yoh going close with their efforts.



The second half started much livelier and Oluwaseun Bello was called to duty in the early parts.



Rivers Angels goalie Charity John produced a diving save to deny Lola Philips mid-way through the second half.



Confluence Queens' technical crew threw on exciting forward Aishat Bello in search of an equalizer and the golden chance arrived two minutes from time when the skillful youngster dribbled her way to the box, but she fired a tame shot straight at Charity John.



Rivers Angels and Pelican Stars were supposed to have played a champion of champions challenge to determine the winners of the 2013/14 Nigeria Women Premier League season, but the Calabar based team pulled out of the match.



Edwin Okon tutored Angels were crowned official champions of the 2013/14 season after the exhibition match with the trophy handed to Glory Iroka by Nigeria Women Football League board member Mr Peter Oguche.
